Tim Darbyshire is an electronic musician/producer and artist from the UK now based in Prince Edward County, Ontario.
Tim has been working with electronic music since the 1990s and has recorded as a solo artist – Head-Space Technology – and in collaboration with David Barker (Asana) as the duo Cerulean. He has been recording as LIGHTFORM since 2015.
Tim’s journey into electronic music began with Tangerine Dream in the late 1970s, when he was attracted to the long-form instrumental other-worldly sounds. Other artists of influence were Klaus Schulze and Brian Eno. In the mid 1990s he began working at Neu Harmony (Synth Music Direct), a label specializing in traditional electronic music. It was here he met David Barker (Asana) and worked with ‘Berliner Schule’ style artists like Radio Massacre International and Air Sculpture as part of a thriving UK Electronic Music scene. The 80s/90s also saw the emergence of the new dance music/dj culture with bands like The Orb and Banco de Gaia providing the roadmap for Tim’s Cerulean collaboration with David Barker.
After emigrating and re-establishing in Canada, LIGHTFORM represents Tim’s return to music making. Structured and rhythmic, LIGHTFORM music builds on familiar relaxed rhythms and adds to the sound palette with warm analog vintage tones. Infused with melody, the intricate tapestry of electronica weaves with sounds that recall the past as well as indicating the future.
…Lightform also knows how to distance itself from its influences by composing quite interesting stuff. A two-headed rhythm structure, each direction of which rolls in parallel, initiates this good melody imbued with chords which sing on a large conveyor blowing up its bouncing keys in a good rhythmic symphony. … See review in synthrequences.com
